Ganesha is a Universal god. There is not a single village or city in India without Ganesha’s statue sitting somewhere in a street corner or under a tree. Elephant deities are also commonplace in China, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Brazil and Mexico. There is a Ganesha rock in Sedona, which indigenous Americans call ‘elephant’ rock.

However, Ganesha is not an ‘exalted’ deity. In most temples in India, he is represented as the doorkeeper. What this means is that he is the guard and hence he is close to human beings.

Ganesha is associated with the root or mooladhara chakra in the subtle body. This is the first energy centre and represents the earth element, providing a solid foundation for material life. That’s why Ganesha is the first god to be worshipped. Praying to Ganesha is believed to bring stability, enabling one to proceed with higher goals in life.

Yogis recommend seeking Ganesha’s blessings before embarking on a venture. Ganesha is known as Vignaraja, the one who rules over obstacles. He represents the energy that controls and removes obstacles. How does he do that? He has special intelligence, siddhi and buddhi, a fine sense of discrimination. These are presented as his consorts.

Ganesha is depicted with an elephant face and prominent ears. Elephants can process infra sound waves (below 20 Hertz). This allows them to sense danger and leave a place before the occurrence of natural disasters such as tsunamis and earthquakes.

‘Gam’ is the beej or seed mantra for Ganesha. In Tamil, there is a saying “Gammunu iru”, which translates as ‘Be still through Gam’. By chanting the mantra you can connect with inner silence and find solutions. It is common to see people tapping their temples with their knuckles when visiting a Ganesha shrine. This activates the frontal lobes, enhancing rational intelligence.

Ganesha symbolises quick thinking and effortless accomplishment. Once Ganesha entered into a competition with his brother Muruga (Kartik) and both of them decided to go around the universe. While Muruga undertook the journey on a peacock, Ganesha simply circumambulated his parents, Shiva and Parvati, and won the fruit of knowledge from them.

Once Ganesha wanted to know the most powerful sacrifice in the world. His father Shiva said, “You have to find out the most powerful person and sacrifice him.” Ganesha asked, “Aren’t you the most powerful person on earth? Shall I sacrifice you?” Shiva was startled, so he gave Ganesha a shortcut, “Whoever sacrifices a coconut is sacrificing Me, and this is the highest sacrifice.”

The three eyes of a coconut are said to correspond to the three-eyed Shiva. When you circle the coconut around your head, it energetically absorbs the lower vibrations in your aura. When smashed, the energy holding back your progress is forcefully disseminated. Breaking coconuts before Ganesha is a symbolic act of sacrificing one’s own life for renewal.

Talking about renewal, from today (Ganesh Chaturthi) onwards Ganesha himself is being renewed. According to the Hindu calendar, time is cyclical in nature. Every 60 years, Ganesha is known to appear in a different form. The Ganesha who is going to be active in times to come will be the Naramukha or human-headed Ganesha!

“Your obstacles are primarily in the following areas: money, relationships, weight and health. These are areas where most people struggle without much success. You need more than human power. You need a God Father and that is Ganesha.

There is a window of time to pray to any divine being. The 4th moon is dedicated to Ganesha but this week’s 4th moon is his birthday so Ganesha is fully present.”

Intense spiritual life starts with initiation. Initiation is called Deeksha in Sanskrit. Deeksha primarily is of three kinds: sight, touch and mantra. In sight deeksa, the guru will stare into your eyes and raise your Kundalini (Serpent Power). In touch deeksha, he will touch with his finger tips, different parts of your head, forehead, your spinal column etc. In mantra deeksha, he will whisper the sound in your ear- a mantra.

It is only after the initiation; the spiritual life of a person begins. The way it works is, if you cannot find a guru, the guru will show up when you are ready. It is god himself who facilitates this process. That is why the saying that guru is Brahma, Vishnu and Siva.

Jesus said that a camel can pass through the eye of a needle, but a rich man can’t get into the kingdom. Why is Jesus so hard on the rich people? Material wealth is addictive and it keeps your consciousness on your possessions. God is not the priority for the rich man. It is not even the priority of the priest; it is only his job which he does for money. So, who is closer to god? Only those who are ready to sacrifice everything for god and love him. God loves those who love him. It is this love that makes him descend into the earth plane as a human guru.

The story of Vasista and Viswamitra is enlightening. Vaisista refused to accept Viswamitra as his student. Although Viswamitra was a king, he gave up his kingship and meditated in a hut in front of Vasista’s house to convince the Guru that he was a serious student. If you win the grace of the Guru everything will happen in a second.

Otherwise, you have to read a lot of books and practice meditation for years. Still you may or may not succeed.
I have many true students whom I never even seen or I only talk to them on the phone. They are materially poor, but spiritually rich. But there are others who see me every day, but are distant from me.

It is not physical proximity that matters. I don’t look for devotees to be around me and adore me and buy things for me. I look for the souls who long for god primarily and everything else is secondary. Many people have received initiation just looking at my YouTube videos. With the initiation program, I turn a new leaf in my teaching career.

Once, the Tamil saint Manikkavasagar, who was the chief minister of a Pandiyan king, was sent on a mission to buy horses for the military. On the way, he met Shiva who appeared in human form, as a guru. Shiva simply looked at Manikkavasagar and the latter got completely transformed. Manikkavasagar forgot all about his identity as chief minister, about his wife and children – all these identities vanished into thin air.

Dr. PillaiHe used the money that the king had given him to buy horses, to build a temple for Shiva. After the initiation was over, Shiva disappeared. Manikkavasagar recounted that during this meeting he had a trade-off with Shiva: “You give your Self to me and take my ’self’.” He wondered who had the better trade-off; while Shiva got nothing from him, Manikkavasagar received everything. Hence it is said that a true guru is the one who can give you liberation just by a glance.

The Shiva Sutras mention a path called ‘Shambava Upaya, which refers to receiving the results of meditation instantaneously. Here, you experience an immediate expansion in your awareness and acquire divine consciousness.

Actually, it is not accomplished through meditation; it is done through the grace of the guru. You don’t do anything; you don’t even meditate, once you have a guru in your life. Through grace, the guru is able to transfer everything to you.

You can read books and gain understanding about the process of enlightenment. However, you will still remain in the theoretical domain. The fundamental thing in enlightenment is the opening of the third eye. The third eye will just not open by theoretical understanding and it is extremely rare to open it through one’s own practice. You need to do more than that.

When the third eye opens, you can always stay in a higher state of consciousness and are totally focussed on God. Then, you are not pulled by karma, maya and ego, and do not return to the old state of consciousness. Then, you know what is going to happen in the future and what is going to happen to the world. The third eye is also the place for manifesting your thoughts and desires.

How can you open the third eye? You can do that through grace. Keep on praying for mercy. When the divine light enters the third eye, you will find that you are awakened. Who is going to do that? It is the guru. That’s why, in Indic spiritual tradition, the guru is everything. What about the traditions and religions where there is no guru? There, the Messiah and the Prophet are gurus. They are called by different names; they are representatives of God on earth.
In karma removal too, the guru can play a great role. When you open your mind and spirit to the guru, it can help you to remove your ego, the part within you which holds on to karmic thoughts and actions.

Why do we focus on the guru’s feet? It is to cultivate humility, to banish the ego. Keep visualising the feet of the guru; surrender to his wisdom and learn to acquire knowledge. By doing so, you can teach yourself to completely overcome suffering and doubt. The guru’s feet will help access divine energy and bring you incredible peace. You will be transformed.

What if we told you that you could get that shiny car from your dreams or the charming little summer home you’ve always wanted, just by thinking real hard about it?

Baskaran-PillaiYou’d probably think we were starting to sound like author Rhonda Byrne from her bestselling book The Secret. But, spiritual teacher and humanitarian Dr.  Baskaran Pillai, who was in the city recently, explains that the power of the mind is indeed unparalleled, if only it is channelled and utilised in the right fashion — like it is in Quantum Mind (QM).

The basic concept of QM is that if the mind is tuned right, it can do things that mere action cannot. A quantum mind is an intuitive mind and not a rational one, and goes beyond reason and intellect. “In fact, even Albert Einstein said that most of what he discovered came through an intuitive process,” points out Dr. Pillai, “It just goes to show that if we are all able to operate from our intuitive minds, we can go past the limitations set by mankind.”

This theory uses science as an analogy in so much that, as one delves deeper realms, the power that can be tapped is that much more — the strength of the mind, too, is greatest in such subtle spaces. But how does one reach such a space? “Achieving a state of quietness and relaxation are the first steps. Once you have done this, the thoughts that you have are bound to be very powerful and they translate to action at a subconscious level.”

In a more practical sense, he goes on to explain, “One must start off by doing yoga, to get into the subtlest mind space. The first step is dharana, which is basically concentration. The mind has to be disciplined to prevent it from wandering. This can be done by picking any one object or area and concentrating on it for an extended period.” The second step is called dhyana, which is a state deeper than meditation. When you’ve achieved dhyana, you have only one thought in your mind.

Samadhi is the final step — it literally means a state of trance, but actually refers to total concentration. “For example, you might be looking at a tree, but you are conscious that you are looking at it. When you have reached samadhi, you remove yourself from the picture —only the tree exists, and you start attracting all the things you desire. All you have to do is focus on what you want and it will come to you,” he claims. Apart from this, practicing QM will also ensure a stress-free, uncluttered and healthy life.

Think about it!

He tweets regularly, youtube is flooded with his videos and he has written and published many religious books. His website, www.astroved.com, is also being updated every day. Meet Bhaskaran Pillai, one of the modern spiritual leaders who have embraced technology to propagate their ideas and missions. Still, he defers at one point from the rest — while others mock at astrology and describe it as a ‘job of the jobless’, he says it is a high-technology work.

Dr. Pillai“Modern spiritual leaders avoid astrology, because it is not marketable. They think it’s not respectable to talk about it. They rather choose yoga and meditation. But, astrology is pure science, which our sages were able to grasp from Ether,” says Bhaskaran, a renowned scholar in astrology and the founder of Pillai Center for MindScience. He is in Chennai to celebrate Akshaya Tritiyai with a series of poojas and homas on May 6.

According to him, ‘going beyond the model’ is spirituality. “Even Einstein said that he didn’t derive E=MC2, from his research, but it intuitively appeared to him. It proves that there is something beyond our conscience,” he explains. While he is happy that Indian government has accepted astrology as a science and allocates funds for researches, he believes astrology as a subject should be studied more in detail and hence plans to start a university. “We’re partnering with schools to study students’ activities in connection with their nakshatras (stars) and compare it with our predictions. If we can prove our predictions, it will be a big boost to astrology,” affirms Bhaskaran.

Throwing light on the daily horoscope, he says that it is not right to use zodiac signs for predictions. “We should predict using nakshatras. The moon is very unstable planet and it positions itself at a different place every time. So, the daily horoscope should be based on 27 nakshatras and we’re in the process of doing it,” he explains.

Bhaskaran is also running an NGO, Tripura Foundation, which caters to the needy. “We don’t just give them food and place, but empower them astrologically,” he says. A native of Rameshwaram, Bhaskaran graduated in English and Comparative Literature and joined University of Pittsburgh for PhD in Religious Studies. Settled in the US, he visits India at least six times a year.

He explains the need for astrology in our daily lives. “While astronomy studies the planetary motions, astrology studies the effects of such motions on humans. It finds out the defects in our lives and suggests solutions. Simply put, it’s a science to correct our lives,” he adds.

What should people do on Akshaya Tritiyai?

Bhaskaran says that people buy gold on this day, go to a Lakshmi temple and do archana and prayers to her. “Acts of charity will also bring blessings of wealth on this day. I have also commissioned a “King’s Pooja” called Gaja pooja to be done for the public in Anna Nagar. The Gaja pooja is historically conducted only by Kings to gain power and prosperity. It involves performing pooja to an elephant, white horse (Ashwa pooja), and Gho Pooja to cow and her calf,” he explains.  Akshaya Tritiyai is a special third Moon that occurs in the month of April-May. Mythologically, it is the time that the five Pandava brothers received the special Akshaya pot that never ran out of food. “It is also the day when Kamadhenu, the divine cow, came to Earth,” he adds. “It is a period charged with material power to fulfill your desires. Since it falls on a Friday, which is the day of Lakshmi, it increases its power.”

There is a misunderstanding that Yoga is simply sitting in a cave and meditating. Yoga could be anything. Cricket is a form of Yoga.

Yoga is only concentration, where you transcend the mind because the mind is very slow; the mind cannot make decisions very precisely. That’s why Patanjali, the Father of Yoga, says that you have to stop the mind; that’s his definition of Yoga. Why do you have to stop the mind? He says then only you can go to your real self.

So, a Cricket player also has to be in Yoga. What he has to do is to be completely alert and aware. Decision making is very important because what you are doing in Cricket is trying to outwit each other. The bowler and batsman are trying to outsmart each other. You have to get to a place where you are better than your competitor.

Your decision is very important because you should know how many runs you can take and whether you can do it or not. You have to make the right decisions and then execute it very quickly.

Playing Cricket is just not a game, it’s just not sport. It’s also mind training and it can be life training as well. In life, you cannot sit and wait for opportunities to come. You have to make the right decisions and also act very quickly.

What you need is just concentration. The Cricket player has to completely visualize everything in his own mind. There should be coordination between the mind, the space and the hands. What better Yoga you can think about than playing Cricket.

If you train yourself in Cricket, you can apply the learning in real life as well. You can take some of the Yogic techniques and apply them to playing Cricket. The players can get to know the Yogic techniques about – what concentration is, how to exclude your mind, ego and self, and then how to be completely goal oriented.

For a player, what is most important is winning; it’s a winner’s consciousness. What Cricket as a sport gives you is a winner’s consciousness.

You cannot go and speak philosophy or the Karma theory to a Cricket player. For him, what matters is that he has to win; victory is important to him.

~ Dr. Pillai
