“Ignorant behavior of the cells is due to the ignorant mind. Once the mind consciousness becomes more intelligent, there is no room for diseases in the body or diseases in the mind.” – Dr. Pillai

As great yogis have known throughout the centuries, scientists and physicians are now finding that we’re far more than biochemical machines.

How can we create better health? In addition to physical things like diet and exercise, our thoughts and emotions directly affect our health, even down to the level of our genes. Our cells are senders and receivers of information, and our psychology and emotions create an information pattern, or ‘biofield’, that directly influences our health.

Many of the world’s wisdom traditions understand this integrated notion of health and healing. The word “yoga”, for instance, means to yolk, or unite, the body and mind. Through the physical postures of yoga, we calm the nervous system, release stress and toxins, and quiet the thoughts and emotional disturbances of the mind. All this allows for the merger of rejuvenated body and peaceful mind – a great healing.

But that’s just the warm-up. In ancient times, the physical postures of yoga were simply a preparation for the deeper practice of meditation. The true healing occurs when our individual body-mind unites with the higher mind, Self or Source – the supreme information field. When our individual information field merges with this supreme intelligence, we become embodied expressions of divinity, wholeness, and boundless wellness – that is the ultimate healing.

God, if you believe in him or her, is not poor and does not have cancer. We need not either. The riches of a healthy life are imminently available within us.

So what does this example of yoga tell us? Our thoughts and emotions matter. Part of our healing practice is to cultivate union – connection with our higher selves and our environment. Find time to breathe, connect with nature, meditate in the way that works for you – take a long run, a seaside stroll, make a morning journal entry, give gratitude. The positive change in your thoughts and emotions, and the resulting shift within your bio information field, may be an important key to healing.
